Giving Back to Our Wonderful Community

Conversation at a Pubhouse isn’t much without a terrific public filled with interesting people up to eclectic things. Our Mountain Town has that unique and generous spirit in droves. Thank you so much to our terrific organizations and those wonderful individuals who keep them going. We are proud to give back to the community that gives us so much.

Uptown Fellowship

We are thrilled to announce that we have resumed our Uptown Pubhouse Writer Fellowship for 2023 and we couldn’t be more proud of our recipient, the incredible Margarita Cruz.

Margarita Cruz received her MFA in Creative Writing from Northern Arizona University. She serves as President of the Northern Arizona Book Festival, columnist for Flagstaff Live!, Mountain Living, and the Arizona Daily Sun and daylights as a bookseller. Her works have been supported by Tin House Summer Workshop and Torrey House Press’ Voices for the West workshop. Nominated for a Pushcart Prize in 2022, she can be found or is forthcoming in Rattle, DIAGRAM, and the Academy of American Poets “Poem A Day” among others. In 2021, she published her first chapbook, Amerixana, with Ignite Press out of Chatham University’s MFA program.

Find more of her at shortendings.com.

Previous Fellows:

Jessica Clark was the 2018 recipient of the Uptown Pubhouse Writer Fellowship. Jessica Clark is a local Flagstaff writer. Her work appears on the stages of Juniper House Readings, the Narrow Chimney Reading Series, and other local events that will have her, and is included in public art piece called the Telepoem Booth. Her poetry and non-fiction draw heavily from her experiences of the Southwestern landscapes in which she grew up.

Justin Bigos was the first recipient of our writing fellowship. Justin received $600 to assist in his attendance of the Frost Place Poetry Workshop this July. His work was recently selected for the prestigious Best American Short Story anthology and his collection of poems, Twenty Thousand Pigeons, was published in 2014.

Local Literature

Fantastic Flagstaff poet and beloved Uptown Pubhouse regular Mica Merryman is featured in the Recent issue of Poetry! Her poem is absolutely amazing and we wanted to give a shout-out for this incredible accomplishment. Congratulations, Mica!

She gracefully signed a copy for the Uptown Library, so next time you’re in, be sure to check it out!
